What Is an Acquired Brain Injury?
An acquired brain injury changes everything, for the person living with it and for the family supporting them. At Opulife, we provide compassionate, nurse-managed home care for adults recovering from or living with the effects of an acquired brain injury (ABI). Whether the injury resulted from a motor vehicle accident (MVA), stroke, fall, or another cause, our team is here to help your loved one live safely and with dignity at home, right across the Greater Toronto Area, York Region, and Ontario.
An acquired brain injury (ABI) is any injury or damage to the brain that occurs after birth, as opposed to developmental conditions present from birth. Unlike a condition someone is born with, an ABI is the result of an event or illness that affects the brain later in life. ABI can result from:
Traumatic causes: motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, and assaults, including a traumatic blow to the head, a neck injury or whiplash, or other trauma
Non-traumatic causes: stroke, brain tumor, aneurysm, infection, or a lack of oxygen to the brain
Every acquired brain injury is different. Depending on the severity and location of the injury, an adult may experience challenges with memory, concentration, communication, physical mobility, emotional regulation, or behavior. Many of these cognitive and functional effects are invisible to others, which can make the daily experience particularly isolating for the individual and their family members.
